Ephraim’s High Point Inn salutes the world of poetry by celebrating April as National Poetry Month. National Poetry Month was first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.

Throughout the years many poetic words have been written about Door County. Poet Frances May of Sturgeon Bay, was declared the first Poet Laureate of Door County. Door County author Norb Blei is a fierce promoter of the work of Frances May, whose writings bore gritty, yet at times sentimental testament to a long life spent on the Door peninsula. Below is May’s last poem from THE RAIN BARREL published posthumously in 2005 by Blei’s Cross+Roads Press.

To All My Friends
Poets don’t die.
They go away somewhere to hide
from the pretenders.
The borderline is a circle
of stumps you can see past
if you stand on your toes
and let the grass spring up
between your toes.
The cotton in your head floats away
and lets you see clearly.
I see bluebirds,
minnows in the creek,
and go back to my violin.

Here is our first entry:
Dare to write
Of days gone by
On this Door Peninsula
Remember well the memories

Cherry picking it may be
Or playing on the beach
Under trees within the park
Nature at its best
Tell a tale of Door County
You may soon impress!

Good luck to everyone and be sure to tell your friends and family!
